6th grade Social Studies: Be an investigator of the past!
Welcome to the story of humanity’s beginnings. This year we will examine thousands of years of early human history. Are you ready? We have a lot of ground to cover! We will take a close look at early hunting and gathering societies. How did Stone Age people live? What do we actually know about the real-life “cavemen” who inspired the Geico commercials on TV? Why did they begin to farm and settle in permanent towns?
During the year we will then “visit” major Ancient Civilizations located across the world. Our virtual class trip will start at the rolling hills and low plains called Mesopotamia (today known as Iraq). We will take a trip down the Nile on a Felucca to see the many sites in Egypt. We will see the Great Wall of China and marvel at the impressive Terra Cotta army buried with Chinese Emperor Qin Shinhuang. We will learn about the Parthenon of Athens the ancient Panathenaic Games in Greece and the gigantic Colosseum built by the Romans.
You will have an opportunity to experience these ancient civilizations through History Alive! textbook readings, video, research assignments, and hands on activities. Group work will be emphasized, developing important social skills as you work together to discover these incredible times.
The Middle Ages, also called the Medieval World, was a time of transition between ancient and modern societies. We will begin with a discussion of the roots of the European medieval world in the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations.
We will then take a close look at life in Europe during medieval times. How did someone become a knight? What was the role of the Catholic Church? Why did poor peasants work so hard for the rich nobles?
This year is about traveling back in time, exploring what make a civilization strong and why civilizations end. We will be exploring the achievements of these civilizations and all the amazing information and inventions we learned from them and use in our lives today.
